How Often Should You Tune a Piano?

Most household pianos benefit from tuning at least twice per year, with additional service during major seasonal changes.

Why regular tuning matters

A piano is constantly reacting to humidity, temperature, and normal string tension changes. Even if it still sounds acceptable, pitch can drift enough to stress the instrument over time.

A practical schedule for most homes

For most clients in New Jersey, we recommend two tunings per year:

  • once in the cooler season
  • once in the warmer season

This keeps pitch movement manageable and helps your piano stay stable year-round.

Situations that may require more frequent tuning

Consider tuning more often if:

  • your piano is in heavy daily use
  • the room has noticeable humidity swings
  • the instrument was recently moved
  • the piano has not been serviced in several years

Final note

Consistent tuning is not only about sound quality. It also protects long-term regulation and voicing, helping preserve the touch and musical character you enjoy.
